Micro league Andronico Purple Platypus vs. Autumn Press Pink Pirates Under sunny skies at Codonices Park on Saturday, the Micro players continue to improve their skills as the season gains steam. In a game between the Purple Platypus and the Pink Pirates, all players exhibited solid hitting and fielding. The Pirates’ Sylvie Love had a strong hit towards second base that would have been a double if the girls were allowed to run more than one base. Pirate Alice Alfayoumi bunted down the 1st base line, where Charlotte Mathews on 1st base tagged Alice out. When the Platypus came to bat, players including Eliza Fosket-Hydes, Helen Stephens, and Sophia Merish-Rose hit a series of singles that loaded the bases and brought several players home. In the 2nd inning, Pink Pirate Jennifer Buckey hit a powerful fly ball into left field which brought a Pirate into home plate. Using coordinated teamwork, Platypus players tagged out Pirate runner Naomi Monihan-Miller at 2nd base. In a solid defensive play, Platypus players Madison Heath and Tess Flinchbaugh almost tagged out a Pirate runner at 3rd during Jade Allen’s at-bat. Younger League Friedman- Brueggemeyer Purple Crushers 12, Moneyballers Red Panthers 14 The Crushers jumped out to a 7 run lead in the top of the 1st inning, powered by solid infield hits by Blaze Goldstein, Gabby Clewans, Avery Rasband, Anya Chytrowski, and Arasani Lechuga. The Panthers clawed back in the bottom of the 1st with strong hits by Eleven Thewlis, Camille Lussier, Jazmin Terry, Sarah Morse and Layla Souza. The 1st inning ended with the game tied at 7 to 7. Defensive play made the difference in the top of the 2nd inning. The Crushers opened with a lead-off single by Taylor Kempf. Gillian Monahan-Miller knocked a ball into left field and Kempf sprinted to 3rd. Two batters later Skye Frank blasted a grounder to 3rd base, where the Panthers’ Kate Henderson made a single-handed force out. Later in the inning, the Crushers’ Eliana Rosen-Bloom hit another hot grounder to 3rd base and Henderson made an identical play for a 2nd out. Despite strong hits by Jana Frank Sonya Love, and Emily Camp the Panthers held the Crushers to 5 runs in the top of the 2nd. In the bottom of the 2nd the Panthers pounced on the ball with a lead-off hit by Hannah Morse. With the bases full Asia Brantley swatted a long ball into left field. Dixie Lewis, Sophie Gilbert, Kira Holmberg and Lena Anderson followed with grounders up the middle. Despite solid fielding by the Crushers, the Panthers pushed 7 runs across the plate.
Nest Egg Blue Jays 18, Five Little Monkeys Chocolate Chickens 15 Nest Egg's Blue Jays showed Five Little Monkeys' Chocolate Chickens a good time at Longfellow Middle School Saturday in a close game played in sparkling heat. In the 1st inning Chocolate Chickens Elisabeth Wing hit a line drive between 1st and 2nd base for a double. Emma Trayner as pitcher made a quick-thinking throw to home for a force out. Blue Jays also played great defense: Grace Schafer Perry made no fewer than three put-outs in that same inning, one on an outstanding stop-and-throw from her teammate, shortstop Emma Chamberlin. In the 2nd inning, Chocolate Chicken Elisabeth Wing got another hit for a single that sent Uma Navarro home, and Kate McNitt, who made strong hits in all innings, hit a fly ball that sent Annie Davenport home for the Chocolate Chickens' 1st score. In Blue Jays defense, after two narrow misses, 2nd base Elizabeth Schafer connected with 1st base Lilly Benson for an out late in the 2nd inning, while in offense, Avielle "Avi" Sherman scored two with a single to left field and never-tired Grace Schafer Perry hit the Blue Jay's 1st home run of the season.
Middle Division North Berkeley Investment Dolphins, Prins Chiropractic North Berkeley Investment Dolphins racked up impressive plays and OMG hits during their game against Prins Chiropractic. The action was particularly intense in the second inning, when Pitcher Zinnia was quick on her feet to catch a fly ball and nearly made a double play as she threw to first base. And just when there seemed to be a lull in the action, a fast-moving grounder was hit to 2nd-baseman Mina, who artfully snagged the ball and throw it to first base to make the last out of the inning. Then there was the batting. Gretta stepped up to the plate and drove a line drive out to left field, managing to put a double on the score book. Gretta's powerful hit also allowed a runner to advance from first to third. Older Division Red Oak Realty Wild Things 15, Albany Rotary Royals 8 This exciting hard-fought game began with strong base hits by Wild Things Sami Chiang and Ana Williams. The Royals fought back with a hard double by Nora Killian and Erin Hoynes producing a triple. The 2nd inning began with Wild Things Tirzah Riley and Hannah Herman slamming hits to the outfield and successfully stealing several bases. Royal catcher Julia Spaner tagged a runner out at home, while Hannah Schoenberger threw out a runner with a hard throw from 3rd to 1st base. In the Royals’ next at-bat, Wild Things 1st baseman Catey Hoehn made an unassisted out, followed by the Royals’ productive hitting and stealing which led to four runs. Wild Things Natalie Burns’ powerful triple, followed by impressive singles by Williams, Riley, Faith Valdez and Sophia Bilbao, kept the action lively throughout the 3rd inning. Highlight plays for Royal defense included Hannah Feiner throwing a runner out at 3rd, and Kelia Human deftly catching a fly ball. In the final inning, Wild Things Naomi Tong’s solid drive with the bases loaded brought in her team’s final run. The game concluded in dramatic fashion with a double play by Wild Things Burns and Williams.
Zonta Fierce 6, Friends of the San Lorenzo Library Inferno 8 In the ABGSL Older Division, the Zonta “Fierce” played a strongly competitive and very close game on Saturday, April 24 against the Friends of the San Lorenzo Library Inferno in blustery winds by the Bay in San Lorenzo. In the 2nd inning, Derby Gill hit a solid line drive past 1st base for a single, then subsequently stole home. Maria Barkhurst hit an RBI single which drove home Molly Sazer-Hopf. In the 3rd inning, the Fierce again rallied, scoring four runs. Alexandra Arriola stole home after being walked. Julia Rosenberg hit a two-run RBI, driving home Madeleine Pauker and Lila Reneke, who had also both walked. Skye Salas made a great hit to the outfield, loading the bases. Then Derby Gill hit another RBI, driving home Angelika Joseph. The Inferno scored four runs in both the 1st and 2nd innings, but the Fierce defense thwarted further scoring by Inferno thereafter. The skillful Fierce pitchers Tatiana Jellinek and Derby Gill were supported by excellent catchers Skye Salas, Molly Sazer-Hopf and Julia Rosenberg. Strong 1st base coverage was provided by Mariel Rosenberg and Madeleine Pauker, who both made outs. The Fierce fielding was also very well covered by Alexis and Lily Driscoll, and by Maite Ibanez de Garayo. The final score was 8 Inferno, 6 Fierce, with a great showing made by both teams. |
