10U Tahoe Tournament Report

Saturday, June 19th - Game One
Sting 0, San Mateo Slammers #1 10

It was a beautiful day in South Lake Tahoe as
the Sting 10U's took on the San Mateo Slammers
#1 at Tahoe High School. Sting batted first and
got going right away as Sierra Jimenez drew a lead-off
walk. A sharp hit ball by Robyn Wampler was snagged
by the Slammers' shortstop and prevented a rally from starting.
The Slammers came out blazing in the bottom of the first,
but their big inning was snuffed out by Quinn Lewis nice catch
of an infield fly and Grace Rusin's perfect peg to nail an attempted
steal of second.

Sting mounted a rally in the third with back-to-back
walks from Mallorie McCrane and Amelia Galbraith, followed
by an infield single by Robyn Wampler, but Sting was denied
again as the Slammers' first baseman made a nice stop on
a hard hit ball off the bat of Isabel Lavrov wit the sacks jammed.

San Mateo continued to tally runs, but were held back by
two more runners thrown out, attempting to steal, by Grace Rusin,
a nice stab of a line drive by Isabel Lavrov at first base and an
amazing shoe-string catch by Allison Hersh in right field.

Robyn Wampler went the distance, striking out four and only
walking one.

Saturday, June 19th - Game Two
Sting 4, Castro Valley Synergy 14

After a snack and a brief rest, Sting faced Castro Valley for
the second time in one week. Fueled by the strong play
against the Synergy in Vallejo the week prior, Sting fought
hard and kept it close, trailing by 8-4 after three innings.

Adi Saaf led off the second with a line drive triple to right
field. Courtesy runner Allison Hersh scored on a subsequent
wild pitch and Sting was on the scoreboard. In the third, Maeve
Gallagher grounded out hard to first and then Aida Baron singled
and was moved over to second by a text book bunt by Sierra Jimenez.
Aida then stole third and came home on the errant throw by the Synergy
catcher. Grace Rusin reached first and took second on a throwing error.
Isabel Lavrov promptly singled up the middle and drove in Rusin. By the
time Adi Saaf followed with a double to right, Isabel had already stole
second and scored all the way from second on an overthrow.

Sierra Jimenez battled valiantly on the hill striking out six
batters, including three in a row. Defensively, the highlight was
Amelia Galbraith catch of pop up at shortstop for the third out
with the base loaded.

Saturday, June 19th - Game Three
Sting 11, San Mateo Slammers #2 11

Saturday's nightcap was the thriller of the day. Sting jumped out
to an 8-to-nothing lead in the top of the first on hits by Robyn
Wampler, Grace Rusin, Sierra Jimenez and Isabel Lavrov.
Sprinkled in between those hits were walks from Adi Saaf,
Quinn Lewis, Aida Baron, Mallorie McCrane and Maeve Gallagher.
The Slammers battled back in the bottom half, scoring three
times before Grace Rusin tagged out a runner trying to score
on a wild pitch and Quinn Lewis struck out the last two hitters.

Sting tallied another run in the second as Quinn Lewis singled,
stole second and scored as Aida Baron was thrown out at first
after a dropped third strike. The Slammers answered again,
scoring five runs in the bottom of the inning and would have
scored more if it were not for right fielder Mallorie McCrane's
throw out of a batter at first with two runners aboard. After two,
it was 9-8 Sting. Sting rallied for two more runs in the third
when Maeve Gallagher lead off with a walk, was bunted over
to second by another beautiful bunt by Sierra Jimenez. Gallagher
then scored on Isabel Lavrov's two-bag blast to center. Adi
Saaf then hit a hard ball to short which was misplayed, allowing
Isabel to score, making it 11-8 Sting.

The Slammers came roaring back in the bottom of the fourth,
tying the game on a walk, an error and two singles. Robyn
Wampler struck out the last two hitters with the winning run
in scoring position to preserve the draw.

Sunday, June 20th - Game One
Sting 0, Almaden Lightning 12

Father's Day brought another glorious weather day in Tahoe.
Jackets were off, spirits were high and sleep was had thanks
to a 9:30 start. Alas, Sting drew the top seed of the other
group, who had won all three games on Saturday. It looked
to be a tough fight and it was.

The Lightning rapped out nine hits, forced seven errors and
stole seven bases en route to their 12-0 victory. The Lightning's
pitcher put down the Sting 1-2-3 in each of the three innings,
striking out six. Only Robyn Wampler and Isabel Lavrov
managed to put the ball in play and Quinn Lewis was the only
player to reach base, on a walk.
